// What is Linux?

In 1991, a Finnish student named Linus Torvalds created a small kernal for his computer, because he was annoyed that most os's were closed source/locked down. for him unix was also too expensive, so he just done it himself. Today it powers 96% of the world's servers, every Android phone, the ISS, and all of the fastest supercomputers on earth.

96%

of the world's top web servers run Linux. Apps like Youtube, Google, Netfilx, almost everything you use runs on linux.

1991

Free

Linux will always stay open source. There are a few distros, which are like the os's that run on the linux kernal that are paid, like red hat premium and ubuntu premum/enterprise, but other than that it has been free and will forever stay free.
